Agra was the capital of the Mughul empire for many years, and has many historic sites. The most famous is the Taj Mahal, but the Fort, Akbar's Mausoleum, and the nearby Fatipur Sikri are all exceptional tourist attractions. The Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz in 1632, and is widely recognised as the World's most beautiful structure. The Fort founded by Akbar in 1565 has many attractive buildings, and the view of the Taj Mahal down the river is unforgettable.

AGRA

Agra became the capital in 1504 when it was captured by the Sultan of Delhi, and remained so until Shah Jahan moved his capital back to Delhi. Humayun captured Agra in 1526, and the most famous Mughul ruler there was Akbar, who constructed Agra Fort.

AGRA FORT

The fort was started by Akbar in 1565, and improved by several emperors. The fort lies along the river, and the views towards the Taj Mahal are memorable. It huge with walls 2.5 km long, and has several interesting buildings, including the Gem Mosque made of marble, and the Hall of Public Audience, and the Hall of Private Audience. The latter once housed the Peacock Throne, looted in 1739.

AGRA AKBAR'S TOMB

Akbar's Mausoleum at Sikandra, 10 km out of Agra, was the second Mughul Garden Mausolem, after Humayun's and before the Taj Mahal. It is constucted from inlayed red sandstone and marble. In extensive gardens, the huge gateway leads to the inner mausolem where Akbar's tomb still lies.
