GOC Holidaymaker Holidays to Jaipur North India

JAIPUR is the capital of Rajisthan, the largest Indian state. Rajisthan is a very colourful place, with the typical bright clothes and an endless list of exotic palaces and forts. Jaipur is the perfect example of this colourfulness, with many unique sites to visit. It is considered the design capital of India, with wonderful crafts and fabrics in the huge bazaars and upmarket shops.
The main attractions are the Pink City with the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), the City Palace and Museum, The Observatory (Jantar Mantar), and the nearby Amber Fort and palace.
Jaipur is an ideal centre to visit the tiger reserve at Ranthambhore and the rare birds at Keoladeo National Park.

JAIPUR PALACE OF THE WINDS

JAIPUR is known as the Pink City because of the brightly coloured buildings in the centre of the city, which is enclosed by high walls with gates. The city is laid out as a Mandela or sacred cosmic design, with wide avenues intersecting to form the grid pattern. The Palace of the Winds (Hawa Mahal) is the most famous building. It was built in 1799 to enable the royal women to watch processions without themselves being seen.

The City Palace stands in the centre of the town, surrounded by high walls. It was built by Jai Singh as a hunting lodge before Jaipur was founded, when Jai Singh II moved his capital from Amber to Jaipur in 1727. The museum and other impressive buildings contain many exhibits, such as clothes, paintings, and carpets. The most remarkable are two 8000 litre silver vessels, used by Madho Singh to carry local water when he visited London in 1901 for the coronation.
Jaipur Observatory
JAIPUR OBSERVATORY (Jantar Mantar)

Jai Singh II was very interested in astronomy, so he built 5 observatories, including one in Delhi and this one. It contains 18 large stone instruments for measuring all aspects of astronomy, such as the time to within seconds, longitude and latitude, and star positions. The instruments have all been tested and shown to still work with good accuracy. Jai Singh also translated many ancient treatises from Euclid and Ptolemy, and the Arabic and Sanskrit documents are in the museum.
