Ooty

GOC Holidaymaker Holidays to Ooty Udhagamandalam South India

Ooty was the British hill station, built starting about 1830 to enable the annual escape from summer heat of Madras (now Chennai). It is 2200 m high, so is pleasant for walking (and cycling if you are fit)
There is not much left of the Colonial period, but it is an increasingly popular holiday destination, especially during the school holidays in April/May. Ooty is a good centre for visiting the scenic mountains, lakes and forests in the area, with many popular viewpoints and walks. There are many Tea Gardens in the area, several of which can be visited.
Ooty Udhagamandalam Train
OOTY STEAM TRAIN

One centre of attraction in Ooty is the railway station, which is the end of the line from Madras via Coimbatore and Coonoor, built in 1890.The quaint Nilagiri Passenger train has featured in several films, and there is always plenty of activity here
Ooty Udhagamandalam Gardens
OOTY GARDENS

The high altitude enables plants to grow which are rare in India, so the gardens have a very English appearance. The Garden Festival is held during May when the parks are in perfect form.
Ooty Udhagamandalam Church
OOTY CHURCHES

The early churches are a fascinating source of information about the history of the town, now largely forgotten. The plaques in the church and the tombstones tell their own story about life from the 1830's.
