Fatehpur Sikri: Between 1570 and 1586 the Moghul Capital was situated here. It was suddenly abandoned, it is said because of a lack of water. It remains today, perfectly preserved a time-capsule of Moghul splendour.
The many splendid buildings are a synthesis of Persian and Hindu design, reflecting the tolerance of the Emperor Akbar for all religions. There are mosques and palaces, smaller houses where his wives lived and a large caravanserai for visiting merchants.
