UDAIPUR RELECTION IN THE LAKES

Udaipur is famous for is views of palaces over the many lakes. A meal at one of the restaurants overlooking Lake Pichola towards the Lake Palace and the City Palace is memorable. In the early morning the mist adds an unreal shimmer to the scene, while in the evening the lights reflect on the water, and the huge fruit bats fly slowly along the lake.

There are several islands with palaces. The Lake Palace was built as a Summer Palace by Jagat Singh (1628-52), and paintings of its original apperance can be seen in the City Palace. It is now the Taj Hotel. The palace can be seen from all over central Udaipur, and is probably the most widely photographed site in Rajesthan.

Udaipur has many charming gardens. Among the best is the Maids of Honour (Sahelion-ki-Bari) Garden, formed when one of the lakes was dammed. It has fountains, statues, ponds and exotic flora giving welcome shade on a hot day.
